Mr. Furlan Sci.

Lab Exercises, Assignments, and Additional Supports.

12/17/2013:

  • Identify how populations can change ecosystems
  • Create a presentation displaying your simple ecosystem research
  • Share main slides with Mr. Furlan

Yesterday you researched specific ecosystems in relation to what we were learning. Today we will create a presentation through the use of Google Docs.

General Slide Setup:

  • Introduction
  • Weather
  • Animal (1)
  • Animal (2)
  • Plant (1)
  • Plant (2)
  • Landscape Formations
  • Countries with Ecosystem

Below is an example presentation created with the Presentation Editor on Google Docs. Remember to follow the general structure for your presentations lined out for you by Mr. Furlan. Also, remember to log into your Google Drive account and share your final product.

Biome / Ecosystem Research:

Today you will begin research for your biome. You were assigned one of the following biomes / ecosystem types to research:

  • Tundra
  • Rain Forest
  • Desert
  • Temperate / Deciduous Forest
  • Savanna

Utilizing the sheet given to you, you will find basic information in relation to your ecosystem that will help you construct your presentation on Google Docs. This will be worth a project grade within Quarter 2, which ends Friday 12/20/2013.

12/09/2013 Objectives:

Identify how the endocrine system controls body processes.
Identify the various endocrine glands in the body.
Identify how negative feedback controls hormone levels.

Use the following links for your activities:

Link 1: Anatomy of Endocrine System

Identify the 11 main parts of the endocrine system

Link 2 Select 2 Parts of the Endocrine System

Your task is to write about at least two of the main parts of the endocrine system

Link 3 Hormones and Their Purpose:

Select at least 10 hormones and write about their purpose in your provided table

Today we will be using various materials to identify proper research sources for use with your paper.

First, one source that is not allowed is: WIKIPEDIA. While you may go to Wikipedia to read about information or a topic, you must use the sources that Wikipedia used to write their article. Individuals who write Wikipedia articles sometimes use good secondary sources for their articles, though it's not a really good secondary source itself.

Where to find good sources?

There's much more than Google's basic search engine out there to help you find sources. The internet is a wonderful tool if you know how to use it correctly. You can even view online ebooks for research!

1) Chicago Public Library has an online database full of 1000 of research articles to use. Simple use the link below (You will need your CPL Card # and know your zip code):

2) Google Books Online Database:

Objectives:
Identify two major causes of genetic disorders in humans.
Explain how geneticists trace the inheritance of traits
Describe how genetic disorders are diagnosed and treated.

Genetic disorders tend to develop due to a mutation in DNA. Mutations aren't always bad, however we tend to identify them as disorders when the result of the mutation can cause harm.

Today you are going to use the following link: Genetic Disorders (Levels)

Objective:

  • Explain how cancer is related to the cell cycle
  • Describe how cancer can be treated and prevented.
  • Identify Specific types of Cancer

Today you are going to utilize various websites to identify and understand the general concept of cancer. In class we have learned about cells and cell division. Today we are going to learn about what happens when the process of cell division doesn't work correctly.

Should Scientists Bring Extinct Species Back to Life? Bringing an extinct species back to life can sound crazy, though possible. Using the article to support your evidence, explain why scientists might want to bring back extinct animals. What is cloning according to the article? Is cloning something new? What type of species are scientists considering creating through cloning, that are now extinct? What are some of the ethical concerns that people have about bringing back extinct species?

Today's Objective:

  • Identify how science and technology are integrated
  • Identify new inventions and what they have to do with science.

Objective:

Today you will research different medicines and drugs that are commonly used today for health that are originally derived from plant sources. Yesterday we talked about biodiversity and the importance of keeping a wide variety of life in an ecosystem. Today we will look at how biodiversity has created plant life that is very helpful in everyday life.

Step 1: Locate and select one major plant and medicine source from this link:PFAF Medical Plants

World Wildlife Foundation

Research and Analysis of Endangered species. What makes environments diverse? The many species that make up one ecosystem! Today we are going to research specific species that are endangered causing an issue with biodiversity in the environment.

Population Data can help people understand how the world works. Today you will be identifying five types of visual data and explaining what each is showing.

Objectives:

  • Explain how Bernoulli's Principle is related to flight.
  • Apply Bernoulli's Principle to different situations.
  • Create a glider utilizing Bernoulli's Principle.
  • Identify and Review concepts NWEA.

Today we are looking at some of the first modern vertebrates: Fish

Today's Objective: Identify specific features of native fish of Illinois.

Main Source: Fish Base

Secondary Source Video (Asian Carp Fish Identification Problem):

On your IPAD go to the home screen and locate "Essential Skeleton"

Locate the spine and answer the questions in the form below. This will be placed into the gradebook as "Vertebrate Exploration"

Purpose: Identify insect ecology and behavior through direct observation. Overview: Today we will be completing a lab looking at how an insect interacts and acts towards different factors.

Materials:
1 Shoebox
1 Cellophane Cover
1 Cricket
1 Flashlight
1 Dropper with Water

Terrarium Setup: Setup of Box for Cricket (Video)

Below you will see various questions that you will need to fill out with the entire group pertaining to the experiment. Make sure that there is cooperation and agreement with the information requested.

Today's Objectives:

  • Identify the main characteristics of insects.
  • Explain how insects are adapted to obtain food.

  • Name the two types of metamorphosis found in insects.

Insects are an important part of our planet's ecosystem! Today we will be completing an exploratory webquest and completing our guided reading using a digital book. First, we will be completing the Guided Reading by filling out the form below. After we are done with the guided reading, we will complete the webquest using
